Mammography

A mammogram is a specialized x-ray used to analyze breast tissue. This method of imaging and radiology can help screen for abnormal changes before a lump is large enough to be felt.

Mammography is a valuable breast cancer screening tool, but can also aid in the early detection of other breast diseases too. Its low levels of radiation make it a safe diagnostic procedure.

When to Have a Mammogram

According to the American Cancer Society, mammograms should be scheduled as follows:

  • A baseline mammogram between the ages of 35 and 40.
  • A mammogram annually after age 40.
  • Any time you feel a lump, have a nipple discharge or inversion, see skin dimpling or notice any other changes in the breast.

Understanding Mammography

  • Do not use powder, deodorant, cream, or perfume on your underarms or breasts (they may interfere with the imaging)
  • Please bring prior mammograms or information to send for them
  • Wear a 2-piece outfit

Your mammogram will be reviewed by a radiologist who will prepare the report for your doctor. If an abnormality is detected, your doctor may schedule you for additional breast imaging or for a breast biopsy.

Hunt Regional in Greenville uses GE Senographe Pristina 3D mammography. 3D Mammography creates a 3-dimensional picture of the breast using x-rays. The technology is trained to detect malignant soft-tissue densities and calcifications with increased sensitivity.

Hunt Regional is the first center in North Texas to use iCAD ProFound AI cancer detection software. ProFound AI is a high-performance, cancer detection technology built on artificial intelligence. The software is used by radiologists while reading 3D mammograms.

The FDA approved technology is clinically proven to:

  • Increase cancer detection rates
  • Reduce false positive rates and patient recalls
  • Significantly decrease interpretation waiting times

As cancer rates continue to rise, this benefits patients by helping find cancer sooner, while reducing unnecessary concern from false positives.

Our imaging center and mobile mammography coach are both equipped with digital technology, which offers several advantages over traditional mammograms.

  • It usually takes less than half the time of traditional film-based mammography
  • There are more viewing options for detection of abnormalities
  • Digital images give better visibility of the breast
  • Images can be viewed on computers, making them available for comparison with earlier images if you have moved

Those who prefer the convenience of a remote location can visit our mobile mammography coach. Women who choose Hunt Regional can expect a more comfortable mammogram featuring the latest technology available and personalized follow-up communication.
