Problems with memory can be concerning and can lead to other medical issues like falls or forgetting to take medication.
Our outpatient cognitive therapy program in Greenville helps patients regain or maintain memory skills lost due to a disorder, illness, or injury.
Led by certified speech therapists, our cognitive rehabilitation services create memory strategies based on the individual needs of each patient.
Who Can Benefit from Cognitive Therapy?
If you are experiencing memory impairment, trouble expressing your thoughts, have difficulty choosing the right words, or find yourself losing your train of thought, outpatient cognitive therapy can help. Caregivers are welcome and may also benefit from viewing the therapy sessions.
There are several disorders and conditions that can cause memory problems. Examples include:
- Alzheimer’s disease
- Traumatic brain injury (TBI)
Cognitive therapy sessions are scheduled 2-4 times a week for 55 minutes each session. A course of therapy usually lasts 8 weeks at which time patients are re-evaluated.
Our therapists use a variety of memory strategies based on the individual needs of each patient. After the plan is implemented, the strategies are practiced and repeated.
Techniques may include:
- Creating a memory book tailored to specific daily needs (e.g. dog care, blood pressure checks, medication)
- Creating a habit book to look at every 2 hours
- Focusing on tools such as timers and alarms
- List making
- Visualization strategies
- And more
