Orthopedic Pain Management

About

Chronic pain is not uncommon. In fact, 26 percent of Americans over age 20 report they’ve dealt with chronic pain for more than a 24 hour period at some point in their lives. That’s more than 75 million people dealing with life-altering pain.

This type of pain can originate from a health problem or it can fall into categories based on the area of the body, some of which include the following:

  • Arthritis
  • Cancer pain
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Complex regional pain syndromes
  • Chronic headaches
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Neck and back pain
  • Nerve compression
  • Nervous system disorders like shingles
  • Pain from failed back surgery
  • And more

Orthopedic Pain Management Treatment and Procedures

The proper treatment for chronic pain can vary depending on its location, whether or not it’s related to another condition, and how severe it may be. Every person experiences pain differently. However, Hunt Regional pain management specialists are trained to identify the best course of treatment to reduce pain and help patients live a pain-free life.

Some of the most common pain management procedures performed at Hunt Regional Medical Center include:

These are minimally invasive injections that help relieve pain in the lower back or neck. Numbing medication is carefully inserted into the spine near the area of the pain. For the best results, this procedure may need to be conducted multiple times.
Another type of injection specifically provides pain relief in the facet joints of the spine, which are located above and below each vertebra. Medication is injected into the area or its surrounding tissue.
These are similar to Facet Joint Injections; however, they’re administered into the joints of the shoulder, elbow, hip, or knee.
When inflammation causes chronic pain in the buttocks, thigh, groin, or hip joint, medicine can be injected into the sacrum (located at the end of the spine) to relieve that pain.
Sometimes, muscles cause chronic pain. In those circumstances, trigger point injections can relieve sensitive muscles.

When a particular nerve is causing chronic pain, medication can be placed directly around the nerve to “block” the pain.

A more invasive technique involves implanting a small wire under the skin. Attached to the wire is a power source that transmits low-level electrical impulses to a targeted nerve or the spinal cord, which blocks pain signals from reaching the brain.
Heat is used to create a lesion in a nerve that causes back pain. This makes it impossible for the nerve to transmit signals of pain.
This minimally invasive technique injects bone cement into the vertebrae to stabilize fractures, strengthen weak bones, and more. Not only does this relieve pain, but it can also help improve mobility.
This treatment is a pain block after surgery, which can significantly improve the recovery process. The system delivers local anesthetics to the surgery site through catheters, allowing the patient to be pain-free. It also provides for fewer narcotic side effects, quicker return to normal function, faster healing, greater mobility, and higher chances of an earlier hospital release.
