Bras for the Cause kick-off Aug. 27
Less than 50 days are left before Bras for the Cause takes over downtown Greenville. This year’s ABRACADABRA-themed event will kick off next Thursday, Aug. 27 at Landon Winery as organizers and volunteers don top hats and join forces to plan an evening of magic and giving. Only instead of wands, they will be waving glue guns.
Each year, creative minds from across Hunt County and its surrounding communities come together in hopes of raising awareness—and money—for cancer patients. Now in its seventh year, Bras for the Cause coordinators are once again hosting a kick-off party to encourage individuals and businesses to get involved and excited about the event.
“Bras for the Cause isn’t about just one night. It is about joining together as a community in a fun way to get people talking about cancer and the very real steps we can take to make a difference,” said Alicia Wittkopf, executive director of the Hunt Regional Healthcare Foundation.
“We have been using the tagline ‘someone you know has cancer’ to remind us of just how far-reaching the effects of the disease are here in our own community,” she said.
Unlike many fundraisers that feed into larger, national organizations, the money raised at Bras for the Cause is used to serve the needs of women and men battling cancer right here in Hunt County. Money raised this year will help to fund a UV light sterilization unit for the Lou and Jack Finney Cancer Center. UV light sterilization renders microorganisms inactive, keeping them from growing, reproducing or being infectious.
“Many of the treatments prescribed for cancer patients leave them with a weakened immune system, making them more susceptible to secondary infections,” said Pud Kearns, Bras for the Cause co-chair.
“This technology will provide an additional level of protection to these vulnerable patients,” she said.
Past events have helped fund the purchase of the Tubby Adkisson Mobile Mammography Coach and are also responsible for the creation and ongoing support of Janice’s Closet at Hunt Regional Medical Center.
Anyone who has previously been a part of Bras for the Cause or who is curious about becoming involved for the first time is invited to attend the kick-off celebration at Landon Winery on Thursday, Aug. 27 at 6:30 p.m. where light refreshments will be served and wine will be available for purchase. T-shirts will also be on sale the night of the kick-off and yard signs will be available for pick-up, along with information about volunteering and sponsorship.
Bras for the Cause 2015 will be held Oct. 8 in downtown Greenville. To learn more about supporting Bras for the Cause, call 903-408-1064 or text B4TCGreenville to 22828 to sign up for email updates. Visit www.b4tcGreenville.org for more information.
